Understanding Dementia Care Needs

Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions that affect memory, thinking, and the ability to perform daily activities. While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases, there are several other types of dementia that affect Toronto families:

  • Vascular dementia. Caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often following strokes
  • Lewy body dementia. Characterized by abnormal protein deposits and can include visual hallucinations
  • Frontotemporal dementia. Affects behaviour, personality, and language, often appearing earlier than Alzheimer’s
  • Mixed dementia. A combination of two or more types, most commonly Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia

Regardless of the type, dementia care requires specialized training, patience, and a deep understanding of how cognitive changes affect behaviour and communication. At Assurance Home Care, our caregivers are trained in dementia-specific care approaches that preserve dignity, reduce anxiety, and maintain quality of life.

Why Toronto Families Choose In-Home Dementia Care

For many Toronto families, keeping a loved one with dementia at home is the best choice for both emotional and practical reasons. Familiar surroundings reduce confusion and anxiety. The same caregiver each day provides continuity that’s critical for someone whose memory is failing. And families remain actively involved in care decisions rather than handing over control to a facility.

Toronto’s incredible diversity adds an important dimension to dementia care. As cognitive decline progresses, many individuals revert to their first language and the cultural practices of their upbringing. Having a caregiver who understands your loved one’s cultural background—their food preferences, religious practices, family traditions, and mother tongue—can make a profound difference in their comfort and quality of life.

In-home dementia care in Toronto means your loved one can:

  • Stay in the home they know, surrounded by familiar furniture, photos, and routines
  • Receive one-on-one attention tailored to their specific stage of dementia
  • Maintain connections with their neighbourhood and community
  • Follow a personalized care plan that adapts as their needs change
  • Receive care that respects their cultural identity and language

Frequently Asked Questions About Dementia Care in Toronto

How do I know if my loved one needs dementia care?

Common signs include memory loss that disrupts daily life, difficulty planning or solving problems, confusion with time or place, trouble with visual images or spatial relationships, problems with words in speaking or writing, misplacing things, decreased judgment, withdrawal from activities, and changes in mood or personality. If you’re noticing these signs, it’s time to consider professional support.

What’s the difference between dementia care and Alzheimer’s care?

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but there are others including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Our caregivers are trained to support all types of dementia, adjusting their approach based on the specific symptoms and progression of each condition.

Can someone with dementia stay at home safely?

Yes, with the right support. We conduct a thorough home safety assessment and implement modifications like removing tripping hazards, improving lighting, securing doors and windows, and creating clear pathways. Our caregivers are trained in fall prevention, wandering management, and emergency response.

How much does dementia care cost in Toronto?

Dementia care costs depend on the level of support needed and the number of hours required. Hourly care typically ranges from CA$30 to CA$40 per hour. Live-in care, which provides around-the-clock support, ranges from CA$5,500 to CA$7,500 per month. We offer free consultations to discuss your specific needs and provide accurate pricing.

Can you match a caregiver who speaks my parent’s language?

We do our best. Our diverse team of caregivers speaks many languages commonly spoken across the GTA. Language matching is especially important for dementia care, as individuals often revert to their first language as cognitive decline progresses.

How quickly can dementia care start?

In most cases, we can have a trained caregiver in place within 48 to 72 hours. For urgent situations, we prioritize placement to ensure your loved one receives the support they need as quickly as possible.

Do you provide overnight dementia care?

Yes. Many families need overnight supervision because their loved one experiences sundowning, confusion at night, or wandering risks. We offer overnight care and live-in care options to ensure safety and peace of mind around the clock.

Will my loved one have the same caregiver each time?

Whenever possible, yes. Continuity is especially important for dementia care. We carefully match caregivers to clients based on personality, needs, and preferences, and we prioritize keeping the same caregiver to maintain routine and familiarity.

This agency has got to be the very best I have ever worked for! The compassion, care and empathy this agency shows not only the clients and families but the employed staff as well is superior and exemplary. I was proud to have worked as a nurse for them and I certainly hope our paths cross again.

My 99 year old Mom has been so blessed to be cared for by the loving, kind and caring staff from Assurance home care these past two years. I cannot say enough about how professional, and trustworthy these staff are.
I live a fair distance away and can only come on weekends so it is a huge reassurance to know that these staff are always looking out for my Mom’s best interest. They stay in constant touch with me and accommodate any special requests my Mom needs. She lives in a retirement home where the staff cannot give her the kind of attention she needs. Assurance staff have made it possible for my Mom to “age in place” and not have to go through a traumatic move in her late 90’s. They treat my Mom like their own mother! The owner of Assurance - Kristina has been super supportive, a wealth of information and always available to talk.
This is by far a 10/10 amazing company!!!!

Can’t say enough about the caring and support we’ve had from Assurance provided to my mom over the years. Was a comfort to know she was so well looked after when I couldn’t be there. All her care providers were professional and so compassionate. The coordination team in the office were always helpful and ready with solutions when anything came up or u called in. Communication was outstanding and I always felt well informed. Mom’s dementia has progressed and she will be moving to a care home. We are going to miss everyone very much.

Glaiza was the caregiver who came to stay with my husband, Bill, for 5 nights while I was away. Bill was VERY HAPPY with the care she provided. He was kept clean and fed, and all of his other needs were met as well. Also, when we arrived home the apartment was clean and tidy. We are so thankful that Assurance Home Care was recommended to us, and will continue to use this company, when needed, in the future. An added bonus is that their rates are VERY reasonable.

I was absolutely delighted with the assessment that Kelly did prior to hiring a PSW. She's a very caring and understanding person and had a special touch with my Mother who was very upset. She also was very attentive in finding a good fit for my her. The PSW's provided the extra support and assurance to my Mother that she was safe and everything would be ok and tended to her needs. I would recommend Assurance Home Care to anyone who needs extra support for their loved one.
