Caring for Ageing Parents in Ottawa

Watching a parent age is one of life’s most difficult transitions. The person who once cared for you now needs your help—and deciding how to provide that support is an emotional, complex decision. For many Ottawa families, in-home elderly care is the answer that honours your parent’s independence while ensuring their safety and comfort.

Elderly care at home means your parent doesn’t have to leave behind the life they’ve built. They stay in their own space, follow their own routine, eat the foods they enjoy, and maintain the connections that matter to them. It’s care that adapts to their life, not the other way around.

When Is It Time for Elderly Care?

It’s not always easy to know when your loved one needs professional support. Here are signs that elderly care may be the right step:

  • Difficulty managing daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or bathing
  • Missed medications or doctor’s appointments
  • Unexplained weight loss or poor nutrition
  • Increased falls or near-misses
  • Social withdrawal or signs of loneliness
  • Confusion, forgetfulness, or signs of cognitive decline
  • The home is less well-maintained than usual
  • You or other family members are feeling overwhelmed as caregivers

If any of these resonate, it’s worth exploring your options. Getting started early often means better outcomes and a smoother transition for everyone.

Our Elderly Care Services in Ottawa

We provide a wide range of elderly care services, all delivered with patience, respect, and genuine compassion:

  • Personal care. Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility so your parent can start each day comfortably
  • Medication management. Ensuring prescriptions are taken correctly and on time
  • Meaningful interaction that combats loneliness—conversation, activities, and outings
  • Meal preparation. Home-cooked, nutritious meals tailored to dietary needs and preferences
  • Laundry, tidying, and maintaining a safe, clean living environment
  • Drives to appointments, errands, social events, and places of worship
  • Dementia care. Specialized support for parents living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia
  • Respite care. Breaks for family caregivers who need time to rest and recharge

The Ottawa Advantage: Bilingual, Winter-Ready Care

Ottawa’s unique character shapes the elderly care experience in important ways:

  • Bilingual caregivers. Many of our caregivers speak both English and French, ensuring your parent can communicate in the language they’re most comfortable with—especially important as cognitive abilities change.
  • Winter preparedness. Our caregivers understand Ottawa’s harsh winters and help manage seasonal risks: ensuring walkways are safe, the home is warm, and your parent gets to appointments even in poor weather.
  • Local knowledge. We connect families with Ottawa-specific resources, support groups, and community programmes for seniors.

Elderly Care Costs in Ottawa

We believe in transparent pricing with no surprises:

  • Hourly care: CA$30 to CA$40 per hour
  • Overnight care: CA$200 to CA$300 per night
  • Live-in care: CA$5,500 to CA$7,500 per month

Many families find that in-home elderly care is more affordable than retirement residences when you factor in the personalized, one-on-one attention your parent receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Elderly Care in Ottawa

How do you match caregivers to elderly clients?

We take the time to understand your parent’s personality, interests, care needs, and language preferences. Then we select a caregiver who’s the right fit—not just in skills, but in temperament and communication style.

Can elderly care help my parent stay out of a nursing home?

In many cases, yes. With the right level of in-home support, many seniors can remain safely at home for years longer than they might otherwise. We’ve helped many Ottawa families avoid or delay nursing home placement.

What if my parent resists the idea of a caregiver?

This is very common. We recommend starting small—perhaps a few hours of companionship or help with errands. Most seniors quickly warm up to their caregiver once they experience the benefits and build a relationship. Our caregivers are skilled at building trust gently.

Is there a minimum commitment?

No. There are no long-term contracts and no minimum hour requirements. You can adjust or pause care at any time. We understand that situations change.

Do you provide care on weekends and holidays?

Yes. We provide care seven days a week, including all holidays. Your parent’s needs don’t take days off, and neither do we.

Can your caregivers handle medical needs?

We provide non-medical care, which includes personal care, medication reminders, companionship, and household support. For medical needs like nursing care or physiotherapy, we can help coordinate with healthcare providers to ensure your parent receives comprehensive support.

This agency has got to be the very best I have ever worked for! The compassion, care and empathy this agency shows not only the clients and families but the employed staff as well is superior and exemplary. I was proud to have worked as a nurse for them and I certainly hope our paths cross again.

My 99 year old Mom has been so blessed to be cared for by the loving, kind and caring staff from Assurance home care these past two years. I cannot say enough about how professional, and trustworthy these staff are.
I live a fair distance away and can only come on weekends so it is a huge reassurance to know that these staff are always looking out for my Mom’s best interest. They stay in constant touch with me and accommodate any special requests my Mom needs. She lives in a retirement home where the staff cannot give her the kind of attention she needs. Assurance staff have made it possible for my Mom to “age in place” and not have to go through a traumatic move in her late 90’s. They treat my Mom like their own mother! The owner of Assurance - Kristina has been super supportive, a wealth of information and always available to talk.
This is by far a 10/10 amazing company!!!!

Can’t say enough about the caring and support we’ve had from Assurance provided to my mom over the years. Was a comfort to know she was so well looked after when I couldn’t be there. All her care providers were professional and so compassionate. The coordination team in the office were always helpful and ready with solutions when anything came up or u called in. Communication was outstanding and I always felt well informed. Mom’s dementia has progressed and she will be moving to a care home. We are going to miss everyone very much.

Glaiza was the caregiver who came to stay with my husband, Bill, for 5 nights while I was away. Bill was VERY HAPPY with the care she provided. He was kept clean and fed, and all of his other needs were met as well. Also, when we arrived home the apartment was clean and tidy. We are so thankful that Assurance Home Care was recommended to us, and will continue to use this company, when needed, in the future. An added bonus is that their rates are VERY reasonable.

I was absolutely delighted with the assessment that Kelly did prior to hiring a PSW. She's a very caring and understanding person and had a special touch with my Mother who was very upset. She also was very attentive in finding a good fit for my her. The PSW's provided the extra support and assurance to my Mother that she was safe and everything would be ok and tended to her needs. I would recommend Assurance Home Care to anyone who needs extra support for their loved one.
