Carve Pumpkins
Pumpkin carving and decorating are the central casting Fall activities. Skill requirements are low, and the creative possibilities are astronomical. Whether you’re harvesting the seeds for next year’s garden, or a salty snack, or you’re looking to create a jack-o-lantern for the window, pumpkin carving and decorating is an amazing chance for the whole family to bond. Widely-available paint and craft materials mean you don’t have to break out a carving knife, if dexterity is an issue for old or young. Orange and stick-on googly eyes are the new black! Work it!
Bake!
It would be hard to find a more meaningful way to bond with an elderly loved one than breaking out the recipe box, or even the muffin mix box! The Fall introduces us to a variety of unique seasonal flavours. Whether you’re in the mood for pie, cookies or muffins, apple turnovers, cinnamon buns, or Autumn bread, now is as good a time as any to savour the flavours of Fall with the people who mean the most to you. A dish spiced with love pleases every palate.
Prepare Goodie Bags for Halloween
Before the trick or treaters come lining up at your door on All Hallows Eve, prepare for them by assembling goodie bags filled with a variety of treats. You can make this a whole day affair; visit the grocery or local department store with your elderly loved one, pick out the candies, select the spooky baggies, and then head home to create individual baggies that will delight the kids and keep the tricks at bay! One for you, one for me…
Donate Items to The Less Fortunate
As the temperature falls, the need for warm clothing and blankets rises at homeless shelters and local charities. Nothing is more gratifying than knowing that you’ve helped a family or person in need. Ask your loved one if they’d like to help with the cause and assist them in going through their belongings and picking out articles that will help keep people warm as the weather changes. This is a great activity for young and old to share. You can all go down to the donation centre together to drop off their goods and see where their donation is going and who they are helping with this amazing deed.
There is so much to do and be thankful for in the Fall, and it is a wonderful opportunity for you to bond and spend time with your elderly loved one.
